About
Rights Direction Ltd, founded in 2009, grew out of Clare Painter’s flourishing business as a self-employed rights consultant, which had been running in Oxfordshire since 2002.
Clare has more than 23 years experience in publishing rights and contracts, and has been licensing content to digital markets for 14 years.
She was Rights Director at multi-platform reference publisher Helicon Publishing, a pioneer in electronic and multimedia publishing with wholly owned reference databases of over 20 million words. There, Clare was responsible for rights licences online, in print and on CD-ROM from the mid-1990’s, and built up significant online revenues.
Clare first stepped into rights and copyright in Italy, whilst working at Mondadori in Milan (Arnoldo Mondadori Editore) on agreements for rights and coeditions. She has successfully sold illustrated reference books across Europe and beyond.
Independent since 2002, Clare has assisted many publishers taking their first steps into digital publishing, guiding them through widely-varying business models and negotiating licensing agreements with favourable terms.
She set up Rights Direction Ltd in 2009 in order to increase the scope and range of services she is able to offer to publishers.
